June 2024

On August 29, the 2023 XR Product Structure, Materials & Performance Testing Forum was held at Shanghai New International Expo Centre. Li Dong, Head of Industrial Design at PFDM, spoke on “Examples of New Materials and Processes in VR Products,” covering VR headset teardowns, applications of high-pressure composite plates and optical covers, and more.

As XR evolves rapidly, structure and materials matter more than ever. PFDM merges technology and aesthetics for outstanding user experience. Li shared front-line insights on innovative materials and advanced design—balancing performance, user experience, cost, and environmental impact.

YVR is PFDM’s flagship tech brand, aiming to build a world-leading VR company. The vision is to change how people access information; the mission is to help more people “play their dreams.” The team emphasizes independent innovation and full-stack R&D—rare in China—including optics, algorithms, software, and hardware, with about 70% R&D staff. Two landmark VR headsets have been released, delivering highly realistic virtual experiences.

The YVR 2 all-in-one (2022) is the only domestic VR headset to win Germany’s Red Dot, iF, and the Most Successful Design Award—proving industrial design strength. Fashion-forward looks, comfortable wear, strong performance, precise tracking, and rich content define its leading style. The sunglasses-inspired integrated design uses high-pressure composite craft and Babyskin-feel paint for a prism sheen and smooth grip.

At the event, Li discussed challenges and solutions in materials, structure, and testing. MR devices must balance vision, hearing, touch, comfort, safety, and durability—making materials and testing highly demanding. He sees XR trending toward lighter, smarter, more personalized products—supported by materials science and engineering.

The forum was hosted by the Liquid Crystal Branch of the China Optics and Optoelectronics Industry Association and New Materials Online® to advance VR/AR materials and processes. PFDM will keep exchanging ideas with peers and, through innovation, deliver more compelling products and advance spatial computing.
